Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'New Era' for New York City in Inaugural Address
On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his term.
An Unprecedented Mayor
The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.
Defying suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”
Adhering to Socialist Convictions
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.
The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.
An Ambitious Blueprint
Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:
- Free childcare
- No-cost bus transit
- A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
- A trial program of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing External Dynamics
The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.
Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.
The Basic Tests of Governing

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.
As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
