The Two Fatalities Revealed in the Providence Campus Attack as Authorities Continue Hunt for Killer.

Both young individuals who died in the weekend's mass shooting on the university campus were honored at the start of the week – while an intensive search for their killer continued following the freeing by local law enforcement of the sole person of interest in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was described as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which paid tribute to her at a service on Sunday.

Her role included vice-president of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans of America, according to the organization. Karoline Leavitt also shared words of sorrow online, remarking: “There are no words. Keeping in mind her family and friends, above all her mom and dad.”

The Second Victim

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his initial year at the renowned school, his family confirmed.

Umurzokov’s identity was verified by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. His ambitions were lofty of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and assisting patients,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a online post.

What Happened

Nine other people were hurt in the weekend shooting in the engineering department of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Law enforcement reported by the end of Sunday that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a search at a lodging about 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“We have a murderer out there,” stated the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and pursue a different angle, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last approximately one day.”

Community Anxiety

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “We know that this is likely to cause new worry for our public”.

The assailant discharged a weapon inside a classroom in the engineering facility on over the weekend, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a handgun, a law enforcement official reported to the media outlet.

Police that raided the inn found two handguns and magazines when the suspect was detained, the news agency reported.

Those Hurt

Among those wounded, a single scholar was discharged from care, stated the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and another was critically ill, authorities stated on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a private academy in the city of Durham, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

Cook was honored at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only here growing up... but at Brown University she was a shining example in that specific location as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the club. “Ella was known for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she aided her club and peers,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by Umurzokov’s death in a message. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, companions, and peers and mourn the loss of his potential.”

The weekend's murders at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US university with about 7,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 shooting incidents recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to statistics. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
