From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a wide array of characters, and a thrilling plot featuring divine entities, fiends, and sinister influences growing in power within the urban setting.
Note: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure are included.
The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed
Episode 3 finished on a major cliffhanger and presented the initial group of characters who will split off from the main group to undertake their own adventure, separate from the other two tables.
This warrior group includes Teor (played by Travis Willingham), the agile character (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).
Why Split the Party?
Considering a large ensemble, it was evident from the outset that maintaining everyone at one table would be impossible.
That’s why, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Overture, intertwining the personal journeys before dividing into three separate parties: Warriors, Schemers, and Questers.
The Nature of the Combat Party
Per the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for participants who are drawn to a typically action-packed fight-heavy narrative style where diplomatic options are few and far between.
At first glance, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander might seem out of place, but the developments of the latest installment demonstrate why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the warrior group.
Motivations for Departure
First, the team has a clear idea where to head next after a brutal opening clash with the antagonists.
Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose passing initiated the campaign’s events—exploited the enemy for his selfish purposes, entering the hidden lair, striking Thimble, and swiping all the magical artifacts to sell off.
The traitor then paid off his obligations and ran away to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.
Individual Reasons
Additionally, each adventurer has a personal reason to exit the urban setting:
- The agile hero, as the close ally and best friend, seeks vengeance.
- Kattigan has experience in Timmony and advises that it is a hostile location.
- Tyranny and Wicander, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to kill the fighter and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
- However, their position as key figures in the powerful family could enable the group access locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Moreover, The fighter swore a life debt to The savior for his salvation and will now follow him wherever.
Fugitives
Finally, all of them are sought by the authorities that rule Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally no longer safe:
- The rogue and The character are notorious outlaws.
- Tyranny and Wicander defied the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
- The target is targeted for elimination by the family.
This leaves them few options but to head to the northern region in search of the traitor.
What’s Next?
Based on the recent installment’s Cooldown, we discover that the Soldiers table will not appear next week, leaving the rest of the participants to form the Explorers and Strategists groups.
Fans can expect learning which characters will be in which group in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, released on October 24.
