As Swimmers Escaped Violence, Popular Photo Captures Rescuer Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, describes the renowned shoreline as her back yard. On that fateful Sunday evening, she, similar to other neighbors, noticed loud noises ringing out through the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was too light and no one could see them,” she explains. Exiting her home, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw told her a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the avenue, speaking to a couple who had hurried up the incline still dripping wet, she became aware of someone approaching from behind. It was a beach patrol officer, dashing to Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. It was just him heading in the opposite way that all the others was trying to flee, while holding that big kit and without footwear … He moved into something that surely every instinct would signal you to move in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely maximum effort running.”

A Symbol of Courage Amidst Chaos

The image that Ching snapped of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of instances of courage in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, police and ambulance crews treating numerous the injured.

Community Outpouring and Assistance

Council Praise

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many permanent lifeguards, remarked that the crew acted heroically from the moment the incident started through to late that evening.

“People have shared so many emotional stories, but the widely-circulated photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” stated a council representative.

“The team demonstrate selflessness every day in keeping our internationally renowned shores secure for surfers and swimmers, but what we saw on that evening should be commended.

“While we mourn and grapple with the terror of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much good we have seen in the presence of such evil.”
