A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the event.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion rose in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the president had been seized.

A particular user, which registered on the site recently and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that users put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However the market's assessment had increased to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a sharp shift in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on inside information," said a financial reform advocate.

Several of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Emerges

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation presented on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.

This sector were examined under the last presidential term. However it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Insider trading is illegal in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting arena.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
