A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
